The Best Disability & AFO-Friendly Clothing & Shoes To Snag During Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale

Let’s start with the pieces I’m always looking for first: clothing that’s easy to get on, comfortable enough to wear all day and roomy enough to work with AFOs—without looking like it came from the “practical but painfully boring” section.

This year, there are several really great pull-on pants, wide-leg styles, easy layering pieces, and a few flat shoes that may work for some brace wearers. As always, check the product details carefully, especially the inseam, fabric stretch, leg opening, shoe width, and whether the insoles are removable.

Vuori Halo Essential Wide-Leg Pants

If you love the feel of Vuori’s DreamKnit fabric but prefer a more relaxed silhouette, these wide-leg pants are a great option. The fabric is ultra-soft, breathable, and stretchy, with a lightly brushed finish that feels comfortable enough for all-day wear. The pull-on waistband is smooth and easy to manage, and the wide-leg cut offers plenty of room through the legs to accommodate AFOs without feeling restrictive. They’re polished enough to wear out but cozy enough for lounging, making them an easy go-to for travel days, errands or casual outings.

Vuori is one of my go-to brands for comfy casual clothes, and this pair of wide-but-not-too-wide-leg pants may be the ultimate travel pants. The fabric is incredibly lightweight, silky soft and stretchy, with a relaxed wide-leg shape that gives AFOs plenty of room without looking like workout wear. The soft elastic waistband makes them easy to pull on, and the naturally wrinkle-resistant, moisture-wicking fabric means they still look polished after sitting on a plane or packed inside a suitcase. They run long, which I personally love because they cover my braces, but shorter and longer versions are also available. These are the pants you can wear with sneakers and a tank for travel, then dress up for dinner without changing your entire outfit.

The elastic waistband makes them easy to pull on without dealing with buttons, hooks, or zippers, and the soft, wide legs provide plenty of room for AFOs. The fabric also drapes nicely, so they look much more polished than regular sweatpants.

I love an open-front jacket because there are no buttons to fight with and no pressure to actually close it.

This one has a relaxed, slightly oversized fit, roomy sleeves, and large front pockets. It’s easy to layer over a tank, tee or lightweight sweater when you want your outfit to look more pulled together without adding anything complicated.

The shorter length also balances nicely with wide-leg pants and jeans.

Easy Open-Front Cardigan

An open-front cardigan is one of those pieces that does a lot of work without asking much from you.

Mary Janes are everywhere right now, and the strap can provide more security than a traditional ballet flat.

That said, these will not work for every AFO wearer. The biggest questions are whether the shoe is deep enough, whether the strap is long enough to close over the brace, and whether the footbed can be removed.

They may be a better option for people who wear slim carbon-fiber AFOs or for anyone who doesn’t wear braces but needs a flat, secure shoe.

Again, I would not call them universally AFO-friendly.

Disability-Friendly Beauty & Home Finds

This is the section for the things that make everyday life a little easier, more comfortable—or at least more enjoyable.

I looked for products that don’t require a lot of hand strength, complicated setup, or endless tiny parts. Some are genuinely useful for people with neuropathy, muscle fatigue, or limited mobility, while others simply make self-care feel less like another chore on the list.

Miko Foot Massager

This enclosed foot massager is one of the more interesting sale finds for anyone whose feet feel tired, achy, or overworked after a long day in AFOs.

You place your feet inside, choose your settings, and let the machine do the work. It comes with a remote, which is especially helpful if bending down to reach small controls is difficult.

Because neuropathy can reduce sensation, anyone with decreased feeling in their feet should start with the lowest heat and pressure settings and check their skin afterward.

Patchology Happy Feet Foot Peel Set

These foot-peel treatments are an easy at-home option for softening rough, dry skin without trying to maneuver a pumice stone or foot file.

You slip the treatment booties over your feet and let the product do the exfoliating for you. That can be much easier for anyone who has difficulty bending, reaching their feet, or gripping small grooming tools.

Just know that the peeling happens gradually over the following days, so this is probably not something to try right before a beach vacation.

Miko Muscle Roller

This rechargeable roller is designed to move over tight muscles without requiring as much pressure from your hands as a traditional foam roller or massage tool.

The two handles give you more control, while the motorized rollers do much of the work. It could be helpful for thighs, calves, and other larger muscle areas, although gripping both ends may still be challenging for people with significant hand weakness.

I would also be cautious using it directly over braces, bony areas, or spots with reduced sensation.

This is definitely more of a comfort and relaxation product than a medical treatment, but sometimes that is exactly what you need.

Before buying, check the recommended room size and the ongoing price of replacement filters. A sale price is only a bargain if maintaining it doesn’t become ridiculously expensive.

Stanley Quencher Tumbler

There is a reason these tumblers are everywhere. The large handle makes the cup easier to carry than a smooth bottle, and the straw means you don’t have to repeatedly lift and tilt a heavy container to drink.

For those of us with hand weakness, though, the larger sizes can become heavy when completely full. The handle helps, but I would still choose the size based on what you can comfortably lift—not just how much water social media says you’re supposed to drink before breakfast.
