What I look for before buying shoes for AFOs
“Wide” is a useful starting point, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. A shoe can have plenty of width and still lack room over the top of your foot or around your brace. Here’s the checklist I use to narrow things down:
- An opening that gives you room to work. Look at how far the shoe opens, rather than judging by the outside alone. Zippers, adjustable straps, and laces can make a difference.
- Depth as well as width. Your foot and AFO need space together. Check the brand’s measurements and fit notes, including whether the insole is removable.
- Closures you can manage. If hand weakness is part of your life, consider how you’ll fasten the shoe on an ordinary morning, not just how it looks in the product photo.
- A return policy you’ve actually read. Try shoes indoors with the AFOs and socks you normally wear, while following the retailer’s return conditions.
No shoe works for every brace or every foot. Use these guides to build a shortlist, then compare each style with your own AFO and fit needs.
