“I’ve got chills, they’re multiplying and I’m losing control…” I live in Michigan but I’m definitely not a “winter person”. Yep, I know, shocking right? After the fun of Halloween, when temps begin dropping, it’s all we Midwesterners ever seem to talk about…rather, complain about. For the typical and “able” bodied winter-despiser, November to early March is all about layering up, thawing out, and general survival.
While most people dislike cold weather, for those of us living with chronic conditions and disabilities, winter’s also synonymous with increased mobility challenges, cold weather-related pain, and realistic fears of slipping and falling on one’s ass. But, not to worry, we have you covered! If moving to Hawaii or Florida is not in the cards anytime soon, there are some snow boots you can buy now that will help to keep you active, warm, safe, and independent. In our, “How To Find Mr. Right Boot” post, we give tips and examples of what to look for when boot shopping if you wear leg braces and have feet-related mobility challenges. But, it’s important to note that when it comes to being able to safely navigate actual snow and ice (our reality here in Michigan), function and warmth should trump fashion (even for me)! So, if you’re in the market for winter snow boots, be sure to look for ones that are either water-resistant or waterproof and have awesome traction. I just moved to Grand Rapids after planning and plotting from Virginia for 2 years. I gotta say, reading all of your posts Lainie of how to survive and thrive fabulously in the six months of the year where there is snow on the ground in Michigan has given me so much more confidence. As a Texan who has never spent more than a few days in the Michigan winter before flying back to warmer weather, I am nervous and exhausted already at the prospect of dealing with that much snow and ice. I’m trying to get ahead of the need and go ahead and pick up some snow boots before I need them. Trendable was the first place I thought to go for ideas. Thank you Lainie!
Wow, welcome to Michigan and congrats on your big move! ❄️ I’m so touched that my posts have helped give you some confidence about braving our long winters here—it really means a lot. You’ve definitely got the right idea by getting ahead with boots and gear (snow and ice always seem to sneak up sooner than you think!).
And thank you so much for the shout-out on your blog, Equip 2 Adapt—I truly appreciate you including me. 💙 I’ll be cheering you on as you settle in and start your first Michigan winter. You’ve got this—and you’ll find plenty of cozy, fun ways to make it fabulous, too!
PS. I haven’t put together the newest winter boot post so please reach out if you have any specific needs you don’t find yet.
Lainie
Thanks Lanie. I live in Southern California, so I don’t need winter boots. But scrolling through led me to a great pair of sneakers on sale at Revere, plus I got your discount code. Happy Holidays!
Mary Jo,
